Family Attractions

๐ŸŽฎ Mini Golf

The Lions Mini Golf Course offers family fun with 18 holes. The first nine are fully wheelchair accessible, while the back nine provide greater challenges. Open weekends, public holidays, and school holidays (10am-5pm). Adult $8, Child $4, Family $20.

๐Ÿš‚ Scenic Railway

One of the park's most popular attractions! This 2.2km miniature railway is operated by volunteers, with stations at the playground and near the Lido. Open weekends, public and school holidays. Keep an eye out for special events throughout the year.

๐ŸŽช Playground

Manawatลซ's largest playground features attractions for all ages—mouse wheels, swings, climbing forts with ropes, slides, and spinners. Set among mature trees, it's accessible from Fitzherbert Avenue or directly from inside the Esplanade.

๐Ÿšด Junior Road Safety Park

The perfect safe space for kids to ride their bikes and scooters while learning road safety skills. A favorite spot for families to develop confidence and skills in a controlled environment.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Paddling Pool

Open through summer, this historic RSA paddling pool has delighted generations of kids. Located with convenient facilities just 25m away, it's a refreshing activity on hot days.

๐ŸŒฟ Peter Black Conservatory

Originally built in 1941 and refurbished in 2014, the conservatory showcases tropical plants from Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. Features a "find the frog" activity and discovers unusual plants like vanilla and pitcher plants.

๐ŸŒน Dugald MacKenzie Rose Garden

This magnificent garden, opened in 1968, features over 5,000 roses in named beds across three sections: formal rose beds, the New Zealand Rose Society International Rose Trial Grounds, and a plant variety rights collection. Perfect for afternoon strolls or garden wedding venues.

๐ŸŒบ Camellia Collection & Loop Walk

Featuring over 1,000 camellias, this world-renowned collection provides stunning color when roses fade. The smooth, all-weather concrete path surrounding the rose garden is accessible to people of all ages and mobilities.

๐ŸŒฒ Bush Walks & Pathways

Native bush, lush landscaping, and beautiful gardens create relaxing gentle walks through interesting surroundings. Many pathways are buggy and wheelchair-friendly, making the Esplanade accessible for everyone to enjoy nature's tranquility.

Wildlife & Nature

Experience native New Zealand wildlife at the Central Energy Trust Wildbase Recovery Centre.

This facility provides shelter and world-class care for native wildlife after treatment at Massey University's Wildbase Hospital. Entry is free, and visitors can explore four rehabilitation aviaries, two breeding aviaries for whio and pฤteke, and a walkthrough aviary home to native birds and ancient tuatara. It's an educational and inspiring experience for all ages.

River Access: Victoria Esplanade provides excellent access to the Manawatลซ River Pathway, perfect for walking, cycling, and enjoying scenic river views.

This historic building, once a post office, now serves as the park's café. Located near the rose gardens, paddling pool, and Wildbase. Perfect for starting or finishing your Esplanade adventure!

๐Ÿ”ฅ BBQ & Picnic Areas

Two free barbecue areas with electric BBQs, picnic tables, and plenty of space. One near the playground and another in the central area. Ideal for family outings and gatherings.

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Parking & Accessibility

Convenient parking available with accessibility features throughout. Drinking fountains, seating, shade areas, and toilets strategically located throughout the park.

๐Ÿ• Dogs Welcome

Dogs on leads are welcome throughout most of the Esplanade. However, they're not permitted in the playground, paddling pool, scenic railway station, conservatory, road safety park, Wildbase Centre, or café.
